Perfect for Fans of: Weird Houses, Cosmic Horror, psychological suspense, questionable narrators
This is not your average haunted house story. Can it even be called a haunted house story? I’m still determining. We Used to Live Here is about Eve and Charlie. They purchase a house on a mountain for the sole purpose of fixing and flipping it. The story opens on an evening when only Eve is in the house. A knock on the door leads her to find a family on her doorstep. The father says that he used to live in the house as a child, and since they were passing through, he was wondering if he could show his childhood home to his wife and three children.
Eve lets them in. What’s supposed to be a fifteen-minute look around turns into a longer and longer stay. On top of the overlong intrusion, things begin to happen in the house that are frightening and unexplainable. Is it the house or the family that’s to blame for the strange changes?
This book did slow horror so well. It was a masterclass in feeding just enough information at a time to keep me on the edge of my seat. This is just the king of weird haunted house horror, which I thrive on.
My only complaint was that the ending, though chilling, was not the bow tie wrap-up I usually like. There are pieces left to the imagination and strings left loose. This was purposeful on the author’s part and is simply a personal taste issue. I like stories that tie into neat bows at the end, but this wasn’t that. Even with the untidy ending, I loved this book, which should say a lot for the rest. I will likely reread this when the spooky, weird vibe hits me for years to come.
